5 Top tips when moving to a new house

We know moving to a new house is a stressful time. Here at BoxIt! We’re always on hand to make life easier for you. Sometimes moving houses doesn’t overlap, but you’ve got to be out of the old place and have nowhere to go before getting the keys to the new house.

We always come to the rescue in this situation, as we deliver our boxes to you, you pack them and once they’re ready we’ll pick them up and store them until you need your stuff back.

We’ve compiled a top 5 packing tips when moving to a new house yourself:

1 Start early

This one’s easier said than done, but it’s always a good idea to start going through your belonging 6 weeks prior to moving, it means you have time to make conscious decisions on what to keep and what to donate. Leave those everyday items until right before you move.

2 Stay organised

Make sure you know what you’re packing, label your boxes if you can so if you need earlier access you know what box it’s in. Here at BoxIt! All your boxes will have a barcode attached, so you’ll be able to take note of what’s inside which box. We’d recommend using something like a spreadsheet or list where you can write these details down.

3 Protect fragile items

If you have breakable items, they will need to be insulated in the boxes. Instead of using expensive packaging material, try wrapping breakables in items you already have including towels, clothing, bedding, etc. Clean socks fit well inside of glasses! If you don’t have enough, bubble wrap is a great solution, but newspaper is just as effective, usually less expensive, and can be recycled once you’re in your new home. Handy tip – Plates are less likely to break when they’re packed side to side, like in a dishwasher, instead of stacking them on top of each other.

4 Packing your boxes

No one likes a leaking liquid – remove lids of gels and liquids in your kitchen, bedroom or bathroom, and cover the openings with plastic wrap before replacing the lids. This will keep them from spilling or leaking out during the move, even if the lids come loose. Ensure you pack heavy items on the bottom of boxes and lighter items on top.

5 Furniture

remember that BoxIt! can also store your larger items if needed, just get in contact to see the cost per item per month. Furniture is likely to be some of the heaviest things to move and if possible we recommended taking it apart prior to moving.
